Emerging a few years later, Ned is hardened but vows to stay straight. But the British colonial system remains prejudiced against Australia's working people. In 1878, a bullying police officer is rebuffed by Ned's younger sister Kate and targets the family for harassment. Ned and his mother are unjustly charged with attempted murder. Ned is determined to avenge his family's name and strike back against his people's oppressors. While hiding in the bush, he forms a loyal Gang that includes his best friend and first lieutenant Joe Byrne. They blaze a trail through the Outback, robbing banks to fund themselves as well as to recover immigrants' land deeds, and giving police the runaround. To the masses, Ned is a hero. To lawmen and the establishment, he is the most wanted man in Australia. When the authorities bring in the formidable Superintendent Francis Hare, and an army of police, Ned strategizes a risky showdown at the Glenrowan Inn. Unfortunately, strict rules in the Stratford household forbid Bianca from having a boyfriend until her odious sister has one of her own-a situation that seems highly improbable considering Kat is a social disaster. Bianca's desperation for romance turns into a convoluted scheme to match Kat with her male equivalent--a guy whose reputation is so infamous, Kat might rise to the challenge and find him worthy of her concealed charms. Mating mayhem ensues when Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger)--a sullen young man with a mysterious past--is bribed by Bianca's wannabe boyfriend (Andrew Keegan) to woo and win Kat, in order to clear the way for Bianca to begin dating.
